Free, Fee-Based and Value-Added Information Services

The situation in Nigeria
There is no doubt that sound information is the bedrock of good decision. In this information age, many factors could hamper the availability and sustainability of the internet services whether they are free, fee-based or value-added.
These factors include the national information infrastructure, politics, corruption and finance.
In this country, the national information infrastructure such as the electrical power supply, optic fiber cable distribution, satellite, information centers and skilled manpower is not robust and as such many problems are being encountered with the internet services.
The politicking game and corruption has not helped matters in any way.
The budgetary allocation assigned to technology has been far from being adequate for basic infrastructures.
I am of the opinion that valuable information should be paid for. Although many of my fellow contributors believe that this will be a far cry judging poverty level of the populace. But I feel that removing corruption and fund misappropriation the populace will have no business with poverty.

lkarimInformation theorists have long struggled with the problem of establishing a mechanism for the valuation of the enigmatic substance of data (information) from different scholars of different angle. However the value of information is an expression of impacts, or how it is usage in different field of study. It availability in many forms not just in computerized form and there have been several attempts to map its societal usage, flow and value but, there is no worldwide accepted standard way of evaluating the value of information par say. It is pertinent to look at information for evaluation from these two perspectives; the potential value of the information/knowledge content of the message and the value of the service that provides the message.

The value of information can be seen as usage, as traffic and as commodity depending on the perspectives.

While the value of information in general is hard to determine, we may be best served by restricting ourselves to valuing information in its commodity form. As such, over the long term, market price serves as a good indicator of the value of information commodities

Critique

The different attempts from the scholars probed and appreciate the uniqueness nature of information; as such its value could only be determined based on its actual need at a given time and its relevance to the situation at hand. Information is priceless.
